Blurry Background on a Budget: Settings That Work Without a $2000 Lens

Every beginner photography forum has the same question: how do I get that blurred background without buying an expensive lens. The honest answer is that aperture is only one of three variables controlling background blur, and the other two, distance and focal length, cost nothing to use correctly. A kit lens in the right hands produces more blur than most people expect.

The Three Levers, Not Just One

Most kit lenses cover an 18-55mm or similar range. The instinct for many beginners is to use the wide end to fit more in frame, but the telephoto end of even a basic kit lens produces meaningfully more background blur than the wide end, at the same aperture and even at a similar overall framing achieved by standing further back.
