Depth of Field for Product Photography: The E-commerce Guide

A product listing photo with a soft front edge or a blurred logo costs sales. E-commerce photography has one non-negotiable requirement: the entire product needs to be sharp, edge to edge. The instinct is to stop down aggressively to get there. That instinct is often wrong, and understanding why changes how you shoot every product on a table.

Why Product Photography Has Stricter DOF Requirements Than Almost Any Other Genre

In portrait or landscape photography, a slightly soft background or a gently falling-off edge is often part of the aesthetic. In e-commerce product photography, any softness on the product itself reads as a quality problem to the customer, even if the softness is only a few millimetres at the very edge of the frame. Customers zoom in. Marketplaces flag inconsistent image quality. The tolerance for anything less than full sharpness across the entire product is close to zero.

This creates a specific tension: you need enough depth of field to cover the full depth of the product, but you also need to avoid the resolution loss that comes from stopping down too far, a problem covered in detail in our diffraction guide. Product photography sits at the exact intersection of these two competing pressures.

Aperture by Product Depth

The correct aperture depends entirely on how much physical depth the product has, front to back, relative to the camera. A flat product like a phone case needs far less DOF than a deep product like a boot or a stack of books.

The Diffraction Problem in Product Photography

Product photographers, more than almost any other genre, are tempted to reach for f/16 or f/22 by default because more depth of field always feels safer. On modern high-resolution cameras, this habit costs real sharpness. As explained in our diffraction guide, a 45MP sensor starts losing resolution from around f/8, and a 24MP sensor from around f/11.

⚠️ f/22 Is Rarely the Right Answer

For most e-commerce products, f/22 introduces more softening from diffraction than it gains in usable depth of field compared to f/11 or f/13. If a product needs more depth than f/11 to f/13 can comfortably provide, focus stacking produces a sharper result than pushing the aperture further. This is true on nearly every camera released in the last decade.

Focus Stacking: The Professional Standard

Focus stacking, covered in full in our dedicated guide, is standard practice in professional product photography for exactly this reason. Rather than compromising sharpness with an extreme aperture, you shoot multiple frames at a moderate aperture (typically f/8 to f/11), each focused on a different point along the product's depth, then blend them in software so every part of the final image comes from the sharpest possible source frame.

Single Frame at f/22

Covers the full depth of a deep product in one shot. Diffraction softens the entire image noticeably on any sensor above 24MP. Fast to shoot, slower to look genuinely sharp under zoom or print.

Focus Stack at f/8, 3 to 5 Frames

Each frame is captured at the aperture's sharpest point. Blending in software (Photoshop, Helicon Focus, or Zerene Stacker) produces full depth coverage with no diffraction penalty anywhere in the frame. Slightly slower workflow, meaningfully sharper result.

For a shoe photographed from a 45-degree angle showing significant depth from toe to heel, three to five stacked frames at f/8 will consistently outperform a single frame at f/22, both in raw sharpness and in how the image holds up when a customer zooms in on a marketplace listing.

Distance and DOF: The Overlooked Lever

Aperture is not the only control over product depth of field. Shooting distance matters enormously, and it is often the easier adjustment. Depth of field increases as you move the camera further from the subject, even at the same aperture. For products that need extra depth coverage, backing up slightly and using a longer focal length to maintain the same framing can add meaningful DOF without touching the aperture at all.

Doubling the distance (and doubling the focal length to compensate for framing) roughly doubles the DOF at the same aperture, without any diffraction penalty.

This is why many product photographers use a longer lens, like a 100mm macro, from further back rather than a 50mm from close range, even when photographing small items. The greater working distance gives more DOF headroom at the same aperture, reducing how far you need to stop down.

Angle of the Product Relative to the Sensor

How you position a product relative to the camera dramatically changes how much depth of field it actually needs. A product photographed straight-on, with its main surface parallel to the sensor, needs far less DOF than the same product photographed at a dynamic angle.

Straight-On Product Shot

Product face parallel to camera sensor. The entire visible surface sits at essentially the same distance from the lens. Very little DOF needed regardless of the product's actual physical depth. This is the standard e-commerce hero shot approach for exactly this reason.

Angled Product Shot (45 degrees)

Product rotated to show a three-dimensional view. The near edge and far edge of the product are now at meaningfully different distances from the camera, requiring significantly more DOF to keep both sharp. This is where focus stacking becomes most valuable.

For standard e-commerce catalogue shots, a straight-on or near-straight-on angle is not just a stylistic default, it is a practical DOF strategy that reduces the aperture and stacking demands considerably compared to a dynamic angled hero shot.

Lighting and Aperture: The Practical Constraint

Small apertures require more light to maintain a reasonable ISO and shutter speed, which is one reason product photographers invest in strong continuous or strobe lighting rather than relying on ambient light. At f/11 to f/16, even bright window light is often insufficient for a clean, low-noise result, making dedicated studio lighting effectively mandatory for consistent product photography at the apertures this genre demands.

Final Thoughts

Product photography's sharpness demands are stricter than almost any other genre, which makes the aperture and diffraction tradeoff more consequential than it is elsewhere. Default to f/8 to f/11, use straight-on angles where the product allows it to reduce DOF demand, and reach for focus stacking rather than an extreme aperture whenever a single frame at f/11 cannot cover the full product depth. This combination consistently produces sharper, more professional e-commerce images than chasing depth of field with aperture alone.
